God of War has topped 5 million copies sold in its first month of launch.

The news came via Sony's "Investor Relations Day" presentation, in which Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera announced the sales figure, alongside some other PlayStation-related facts and figures. These new figures would suggest that God of War has smashed many of Sony's previously held sales records for the PS4, so it's been a pretty runaway success for the company. There's reportedly another installment in development, too, so that's got to be great news for Sony's long-term business plan.

God of War, the newest entry in the long-running action-adventure franchise, was originally released on April 20th. The game sees longtime protagonist Kratos journeying to the nine realms of Norse mythology to spread his second wife's ashes. The couple's son, Atreus, joins him on this journey, and the game focuses on their relationship, as well as Kratos' status as a god (which his son is unaware of). The game is a "soft reboot", which keeps the series' narrative continuity intact but changes up the gameplay for a slower, more contemplative combat style. It's still pretty brutal, though, so fans of the series can rest easy.

Players responded very well to the launch of the game; God of War quickly became the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive of all time, with 3.1 million units sold in its first 3 days on sale. The game is a pretty phenomenal critical success, too, currently maintaining a 94 score on Metacritic, which it's had for around a month now. It's currently sitting at number 72 on the "best games of all time" Metacritic list, which isn't too shabby considering that list spans multiple generations. We rather liked it ourselves; you can check out TechRaptor's review of God of War right here.
