Today Sony Santa Monica Studio announced that its latest action adventure game God of War Ragnarok has sold 11 million copies.
The announcement specifically mentions that we're talking bout a sell-through figure, which means that those 11 million copies have been sold to customers and not simply shipped to retailers.
The game has been released on November 9, 2022, so these sales have been achieved in less than three months, which is certainly flattering for an exclusive game available only on PS5 and PS4.
If you're unfamiliar with the game, it's the sequel of the studio's critically acclaimed God of War from 2018, and it continues the story of Kratos and his son Atreus after the titular god of war moved away from Greece and to the snowy lands of the far north. The series debuted all the way in 2005 with the original game on PlayStation 2, but it has changed radically since the 2018 game.
Interestingly, tomorrow morning Sony will host its quarterly financial conference call, so the timing for the announcement of the sales isn't surprising. It's quite likely that the game will be mentioned as an example of PlayStation's success to the audience of investors and analysts during the event.
At the moment, we don't know what Sony Santa Monica is planning as its next game, and if we're going to see a third game of the "Norse saga" of God of War any time soon. Four years passed between the reveal of God of War and God of War Ragnarok, and the second game was teased in 2020 and then officially announced in 2021, so we'll likely have to wait for quite some time to hear what's next for Kratos and Atreus.
