God of War has become the PlayStation 4’s fastest-selling exclusive ever, according to a post on the PlayStation Blog.

Santa Monica Studio’s critically-acclaimed continuation of the series sold 3.1 million units in the three day period from April 20-22. The massive sales numbers aren’t particularly surprising, considering the review scores the game garnered in the weeks before release. Currently, the game holds a 94 on Metacritic, placing just below Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us Remastered.

God of War beats out previous record holder Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End by a large margin. Naughty Dog’s last entry in the series, released in May 2016, sold 2.7 million copies in its first week. 2017’s Horizon: Zero Dawn sold 2.6 million in its first two weeks. Still, Sony’s new exclusive falls short of Grand Theft Auto V’s incredible 11.2 million copies sold on day one.

Head of Santa Monica Studio Shannon Studstill released a statement on the PlayStation Blog alongside the sales announcement:

“I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.”

Kratos' latest adventure comes five years after the release of God of War: Ascension. It isn’t only a continuation of the long-running franchise; it’s a reinvention. Its setting has moved from ancient Greece into Norse mythology. The story has a much smaller scale than its predecessor, focussing on the relationship between a father and son.

Creative Director Cory Barlog has stated that he has plans for many more games in the series. Hopefully, the next follow-up won’t take another five years and stay tuned for TechRaptor's upcoming review.
