Ubisoft today announced that they are working on a feature length documentary as a companion to the upcoming tactical open world shooter Ghost Recon Wildlands. This documentary is meant to show the brutal and deadly drug trade in South America and aims to provide the game, which is based on a fictional version of Bolivia, with some additional context.

The documentary is titled Wildlands and will focus on telling the stories of influential people on both sides of the issue, giving viewers an exclusive look into what is now a billion dollar industry despite local law enforcement's treatment of suspected drug smugglers.

We spoke to the people who know the drug trade better than anyone else; iconic characters, from either side of the law, who have defined this continent’s notorious image. The war on drugs is a complex one and we give viewers unprecedented insight to the people who have shaped this landscape, enabling a better understanding of a global issue which affects us all.

- Colin Offland, Director

This documentary, made in conjunction with Chief productions, will be narrated by Rusty Young (author of Marching Powder) and will bring together a colorful cast of characters involved in the South American drug trade. The documentary will feature interviews with George Jung, whom you may know from the film Blow starring Johnny Depp, former Navy SEAL Adam Newbold, and reformed drug trafficker Thomas McFadden. However, the documentary doesn't focus exclusively on the big players of the drug trafficking industry. The documentary will feature footage of small-time traffickers and smugglers, as well as money launderers, informants and law enforcement officers in order to give you as much perspective as possible.
Wildlands is a thought-provoking depiction of this complex issue. This subject matter has accumulated huge global interest and we believe that, as a companion to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, we take gamers and viewers of Wildlands on a journey of discovery of an issue that continues to grip and fascinate global audiences.

- Geoffroy Sardin, Senior Vice President - Sales & Marketing at Ubisoft

The Wildlands documentary will be released on March 6, one day before the official release of Ghost Recon Wildlands.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
