Mihoyo has announced that Genshin Impact 2FA will finally be debuting today after months of complaints about stolen accounts, adding greater security to your hard-earned items and characters.

Genshin Impact has rapidly become one of the most popular free-to-play games around the world. That shouldn't come as a surprise considering that it's a ton of fun and has fantastic character design; it's certainly built up a strong fandom in both the West and its native Asia.

Unfortunately, popularity also brings some downsides. Late last year, Mihoyo announced that it had received a number of complaints through its customer service channels about account security, including accounts being stolen entirely. An internal audit revealed that there were no issues with the account system itself, but the lack of 2-Factor Authentication was still a problem for some people. Now, that's being fixed starting today.

How to Turn On Genshin Impact 2FA (and How it Works)

The debut of Genshin Impact 2FA has already kicked in less than eight hours ago according to an announcement from Mihoyo (via ResetEra). Going forward, anyone logging into their account will be presented with a prompt to activate a new security verification function. Once it's turned on, a verification code will be sent to either your linked e-mail address or mobile number.

It looks like you won't have to authenticate your device every time, mind; it seems that the security prompt will only come up when you attempt to log in on a new device. This should make it a little more difficult for hackers to steal your account.

Of course, you'll need to actually have an e-mail address or mobile number linked to your Genshin Impact account. You can manage these settings in Mihoyo Account > Account Management > Login Devices.

The debut of a Genshin Impact 2FA is certainly welcome news for anyone who has been playing for some time, although this is just a first step. There still is not yet support for a proper authenticator app just yet; hopefully, Mihoyo will investigate this option at a future date. If you haven't yet jumped into this fantastic free-to-play world, you can play Genshin Impact for free on PC, PlayStation, and mobile devices via its official website.
