The developers of Niche - a genetics survival game have announced that they will be releasing a free edition for educational institutions. Everyone else is gonna have to buy the game, but it also just so happens to be on sale — but only for the next day or so.

Niche is a game that combines roguelike mechanics and turn-based strategy into something like 2008's Spore. Players create their own mammalian creature and let it loose in the world, hopefully dodging deadly predators, surviving nasty climate changes, and avoiding terrible diseases.

According to the developers, schools have been requesting how to buy bundles of the game to use in classrooms. As a result, they've just decided to up and make it 100% free for educational institutions.

Dear teachers

We have been contacted by quite a few of you, asking us to sell bundles for Niche to use in the classroom. That is why we decided to make the game available to schools for free!

So if you’re interested in getting our free educational version, reach out to us.

If possible please use your schools’ email address! Let us know your name, the school where you teach and how many students are in your class. We will then reach out to you via email and send you the download link. We will also add you to our teacher newsletter and always send a heads-up when a new version of the game is released.

We hope you and your students will enjoy playing Niche

There is one critical caveat, however. Niche will not run on Chromebooks, smartphones, or tablets, so classrooms are going to need to be equipped with at least a low-end PC running Windows 7, Mac OSX 10.8, or Ubuntu 12.04 or higher.

As for the rest of us, you can get Niche on sale on Steam, the Humble Store, or GOG at a price of $12.59 or your regional equivalent, a 30% discount off of its regular price of $17.99. Act quickly, though — this discount ends at 10:00 AM Eastern on August 7, 2019. You can get an idea of what Niche is all about by watching the delightfully-cheesy trailer below.

Disclosure: Humble Bundle works with TechRaptor for affiliate partnership, and TechRaptor earns a small commission off purchases made from some links in this article. In addition, GOG provides a monthly giveaway to our Pack Hunter members.

What do you think of Stray Fawn Studios making Niche available to schools for free? Are you going to pick up this game while it's on sale? Let us know in the comments below!
