Godfall

Tonight during The Game Awards, we got our first look at Godfall, a next-generation lootfest arriving on the PS5 late next year.

Published by Gearbox Software and developed by Counterplay Games, Godfall is a self-described "looter-slasher" that launches along with the PlayStation 5 during the holiday season in 2020. It will also release on the PC at the same time on the Epic Games Store.

Godfall allows players to go solo or team up with a group of up to two other players total, with a max party size of three. Your task is to fight giant monsters such as the deadly hydra-like beast seen in the trailer above, all the while collecting loot like new, flashy armor sets and more. Godfall is played via a third-person perspective and offers visceral melee combat for players hack, slash, and loot away.

According to a press release, Godfall Creative Director Keith Lee says:

We're innovating with Godfall to provide a fresh take on action RPGs by rewarding skill-based offensive gameplay and making every hit matter. Namely, we want to feed into that yearning for the next best piece in your character build, so we plan to provide plenty of loot to players to ensure there's meaningful impact to gameplay and playstyles.

This release will mark developer Counterplay Games' first official game to hit the markets, although the company itself comprises industry veterans who have worked on AAA titles like God of War and Gears 5.

Quick Take

It's a teaser, but I love the premise. I'm a sucker for looter-type games, like Borderlands or Diablo. I prefer a fantasy theme for my games above all else, so I'm looking forward to collecting sweet pieces of armor. It's my hope that you can mix and match and add a great deal of personality to your armor and whatever other kinds of loot you can get. The team behind Godfall seems to have a good, competent crew at its helm too, so that makes it all the more promising.
