A young woman named Merryn waits for her father to return home from a fishing expedition. She has a dream that he is trapped underwater, and so she builds a submarine from spare junk in order to go out looking for him.
Song of the Deep will include all of the expected tools in a Metroidvania-style game. The player can upgrade their submarine in order to explore new areas underwater. The game world will not be linear and allow the player some degree of freedom in exploring. Special note is made of how the player can combine certain abilities in interesting ways such as catching an incoming torpedo with the submarine's claw arm.
The trailer has also shown Merryn swimming outside of the submarine which might be explained by the need to explore smaller areas or because the submarine itself may have been damaged. An announcement news post on Insomniac Games' website states that players will upgrade their submarine through use of a substance called "Tyne". Puzzles will also be a feature in the game to some degree.
Most interestingly, the game will be published by Gamestop and is available for preorder on their website. This will be the first title that Gamestop is publishing, and Insominiac have stated that they would be open to continuing the publishing relationship with Gamestop if there are future titles in this series although Insomniac owns the IP and has full creative control.
Song of the Deep is slated for release in Summer 2016 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One for $14.99 or your regional equivalent.
