Death Stranding gets a lot of time at Gamescom this year, with Hideo Kojima himself taking the stage to introduce some new characters in Death Stranding, along with a bit of gameplay on top in a 27 minute promotion at the Gamescom ONL this year.

Kojima introduced a new character in the game named Mama, a young woman played by Margaret Qualley, who is shown breastfeeding a shadow of a baby she calls her 'daughter' before letting it fly into the air. According to Kojima, her baby was born "on the other side" but her and her baby are connected by the child's umbilical cord, forcing Mama to stay trapped where she is in the real world.

Another trailer included the Bridge Baby and the Deadman, played by Guillermo Del Toro. The Bridge Baby, it is explained by Deadman, is a bridge between the real world and the world of the dead. This allows protagonist Sam, played by Norman Reedus, to see the DT's. The Deadman, in contrast, is shown as a hologram, dumping exposition for the audience over the primary mission of the game - returning the bridge baby to the womb of its mother. The bridge baby is used in the pod for Sam, and the Deadman warns Sam to not get attached to the baby either, as they can sometimes get self-poisoned if you are not careful.

The gameplay itself showed off Sam in an open world, delivering a large bit of cargo and urinating for a few moments out of nowhere before shouting into the open as he travels across a rocky hillside. Several tools and items are shown, such as a large collapsible ladder, which allows Sam to climb the side of a hill face to get to a hidden bunker. It also shows Sam taking care of the baby, soothing it at times by rocking it around in your hands for a few moments to have it stop crying. The video also showed a cameo of Geoff Keighley himself, voiced by Matthew Mercer. Keighley will be one of many cameos featured in the game.

The entire goal of the game, according to Kojima, is to connect the fractured people across the country, from East to West from the DT, terrorists, or other threats across the landscape. Sam acts as a deliveryman across the game, meeting with characters nicknamed preppers, who can provide supplies and items to Sam for his journey. The more preppers and people you are connected to, the more benefits you get. Kojima also talked about the little bits of the trailer, such as how to use the Playstation motion controls to calm the baby when it is in distress, along with explaining that the urination section in the footage can actually be used as a weapon, and will be "a key to something later." The goal of connection goes beyond the game world, as he wants this to be a game to bring people together.

Death Stranding, despite its odd presence and unique gameplay elements, has been highly anticipated since it was first revealed in 2016. Death Stranding is scheduled for release on November 8th, 2019.
