Sega has revealed the full Genesis Mini 2 game list, and it's good news if you love obscure Sega classics. Well-known titles like Ecco the Dolphin, Night Trap, and Sonic CD rub shoulders with lesser-known games like Crusader of Centy, and what's more, the console is getting a simultaneous US and EU release.
What is the full Sega Genesis Mini 2 game list?
Last month, it was announced that the Genesis Mini 2 would be making its way to North America, complete with more than 50 games. Some of those games were already revealed prior to this announcement, but we've now got the full list of Genesis Mini 2 games (or Mega Drive 2 games if you're in Europe), and it's a big one. The console will boast "60+1" titles, according to Sega, one of which has never been released in any form before and some of which are beloved cult classics (like mid-90s adventure Crusader of Centy).
There's also a rather exciting unrevealed game, which Sega describes as an "extra bonus game". We don't know what that one is yet, though, so we're going to have to wait until closer to release to get more info on it. This list notably excludes a couple of the games announced as part of the Japanese Mega Drive 2 lineup, including Shin Megami Tensei, Lunar, and Snatcher. Still, it's a pretty impressive lineup for retro fans to sink their teeth into, and there's very little overlap with the original Genesis Mini, which is good. It's also nice to see some obscure stuff on here like Crusader of Centy and Devi & Pii, so there should be something here for you even if you think you've played everything Sega has to offer.
What is Crusader of Centy and why should you care about it?
One of the Sega Genesis Mini 2 games that's getting some attention is Crusader of Centy, which is an obscure old-school RPG from the mid-90s. It sold pretty poorly when it launched in 1995, although it fared rather better in reviews, and since launch, it's become something of a sought-after title, with graded copies now reaching over $4,000 in the second-hand market. It might be helpful to think of Crusader of Centy as the Genesis' Panzer Dragoon Saga in that it's a cult RPG that reviewed well, sold poorly, and became super-valuable after launch.
Alongside the actual game, a hint book was released in 1995, and amusingly enough, the hint book is now also a collector's item because it was available in limited quantities via mail order. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be included in the Genesis Mini 2 release. What is it with Sega and misplacing relics from its past? Hopefully, this paves the way for some kind of Saturn Mini release containing Panzer Dragoon Saga, although considering the source code has been lost, that's not looking likely.
When is the Sega Genesis Mini 2 release date?
Sega has revealed that the Genesis Mini 2 will launch simultaneously in Europe and the US on October 27th, so whether you're picking up the Genesis or the Mega Drive Mini 2, you'll be able to do so alongside your friends across the pond. The game list is identical between Europe and the US, too, so you're not missing out on anything important if you're a European player.
