Frostpunk 2 developer and publisher 11 bit studios has announced that the game has recouped its development and marketing costs, which means that after just a few days on sale, it's already profitable.
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), 11 bit says that in the three days since Frostpunk 2 was released, the game has crossed 350,000 sales, which is pretty impressive for what is essentially a fairly niche title.
The studio goes on to say that the total estimated revenue from the sales Frostpunk 2 has accrued so far "has already covered the costs we spent on producing and marketing the game", so everything that comes in from sales now is profit rather than cost recouping.
11 bit says that although it's touched by players' support for Frostpunk 2, "the work doesn't stop here". The studio says it's "continuously working on improving" the Frostpunk 2 experience with hotfixes and updates, so development is still very much ongoing.
So, what does Frostpunk 2's success mean for the game? Well, it's too early to call just yet, of course, but Frostpunk 3 seems like it's probably on the cards now, if it wasn't already.
Additionally, given that 11 bit looks like it'll have some money left over from Frostpunk 2's success, we might very well expect a major DLC expansion or two somewhere down the line, akin to the first game's The Last Autumn or On the Edge.
Frostpunk 2 is, as you might expect, the sequel to the 2018 societal survival sim Frostpunk. It takes place 30 years after the first game and has you building a city amidst the advent of petroleum in a post-apocalyptic land blighted by permanent winter.
Just like in the first game, you'll be making very difficult moral and political choices as you navigate your newfound position as leader, but the sequel introduces factions , districts, and other new features that complicate matters.
You can check out Frostpunk 2 right now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. If you want to know whether the sequel measures up to the original, then be sure to take a look at our review, and don't forget to read our interview with the game's director to get the lowdown on development too!
