From Software's fantasy action RPG series Dark Souls has shipped over 25 million units worldwide. This figure takes into account both physical sales and digital downloads across the franchise's lifespan.

Dark Souls was originally released in 2011 for Xbox 360 and PS3. The game is a spiritual successor to From Software's PS3 exclusive Demon's Souls. Publishing duties for Dark Souls were handled by Bandai Namco worldwide and From Software in Japan. Dark Souls quickly became a hit among gamers thanks to its punishing gameplay and unique world-building. A remastered version launched in 2018 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. This version includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC and brings a number of mechanical and visual improvements to the game.

In 2014, From Software once again teamed up with Bandai Namco and released Dark Souls II. This game shifted the action to the kingdom of Drangleic but largely kept the same exploration-combat loop of its predecessor. An updated version titled Scholar of the First Sin launched for PS4 and Xbox One (as well as PC and last-gen consoles) in 2015. This edition packed in the game's three DLC packs and adjusted some of the less well-received design elements.

Another sequel, Dark Souls III, followed in 2016. Unlike the second game, the third was once again directed by Demon's and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Dark Souls III shares many story elements with the first game and features an increased emphasis on different styles of combat. An ultimate edition of the game, The Fire Fades, launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in April 2017. The Fire Fades packs in the base game plus its two DLC expansion packs.

We're not sure what's next for From Software's venerable franchise. The studio is working with A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin on a new fantasy IP titled Elden Ring. Hidetaka Miyazaki is returning to direct Elden Ring and Bandai Namco will once again publish the game worldwide. That's probably where Miyazaki's attention will be for the foreseeable future. Still, with 25 million units shipped, it's hard to imagine that From Software's old flame has faded for good.
