Friday the 13th: The Game has come a long way since its original beginnings as a generic homage to slasher films. It has since secured the Friday the 13th licensing, held a successful Kickstarter campaign and beta playtest. Now the project is almost ready for release.
Initially, the game was expected in October of 2016 but the release date was pushed back until the spring of 2017 so that additional content and improvements could be added to the game. Part of that additional content was a single player mode for the camp counselor hunting experience. Now that spring is here though it seems single player mode isn’t quite ready, and the while the game will still be launching on the date planned some of that extra content it was originally delayed for won’t be coming until even later.
The FAQ on the game’s official site explains,
“The game will include single player, however it will come as an update in Summer 2017. We originally started as a multiplayer only game but were able to secure additional funding to expand the game. Single player will consist of objective-based missions where you take control of Jason. You’ll get to see missions that will remind you of the movies, as well as entirely new scenarios to sink your machete into! The single player mode will allow players to assume the role of the murderous Jason as he hunts down camp counselors and completes mission objectives. Playing as a camp counselor in single player mode won’t be an option. Multiplayer mode will include a 1v7 scenario as the counselors do their best to survive the pursuits of the iconic villain. We will also include offline counselor bots that you’ll be able to fight against without needing an online connection!”
With the addition of the character Tommy Jarvis and the single player content, the game’s price was increased from its original listing. Even with the delay of some of that content the game’s price has not changed but those that have purchased it will get the additional single player content at no additional charge when it is released sometime in the summer of 2017.
Friday the 13th: The Game will launch on PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 26th as a purely multiplayer experience so Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus memberships will be needed to play the game on consoles until the single player mode is available in the summer. It is available to order as a digital copy for $40 or a physical edition for $60.
