Highly anticipated horror game Friday the 13th: The Game was slated for release during the Halloween season this year but a recent announcement from developers Gun Media informs gamers that the game is being delayed until Spring 2017. There’s a good reason for the release date’s delay, though; the extra development time will go towards adding a single-player campaign to the game as well as playable character Tommy Jarvis and more.

Getting its start as a survival game called Slasher Vol 1: Summer Camp Gun Media later was granted permission to use the Friday the 13th license to make the game into the Camp Crystal Lake simulation it always wanted to be. With the support of many members of the original Friday the 13th film team and a successful Kickstarter campaign, the multiplayer horror video game was well on its way to a Fall 2016 release. A single player mode had always been a stretch goal idea for the developers and after receiving a lot of interest for the feature they decided to delay the game’s release in order to add it and other elements to the game.
“The first thing people are going to read here is ‘delay,'” said Gun Media studio head Wes Keltner. “We want everyone to be assured that coming to our decision to delay was no easy matter, but we believe that the positives far outweigh the negatives. We’ve been reading day in and day out on our social media feeds that single player and Tommy Jarvis were in such a demand that we couldn’t ignore our fans. After securing funding, we’re here to tell you that it is a reality and we’re making this game even bigger. It sucks that there’s a delay, but the wait won’t be too long and it’s going to offer more for fans in the long-run!”Friday the 13th: The Game will pit players against one another in a 1v7 survival format with Jason Voorhees tracking down and eliminating teenage camp counselors, while the teens must band together-or not-to survive the night. Returning character from the film franchise, Tommy Jarvis, is being added as a playable character for multiplayer. A new map, Packanack Lodge from the film Friday the 13th: Part 2, is also being added to the game making a total of 3 playable maps for multiplayer.
Although the game’s release is being delayed the Beta will still be available this Fall. Kickstarter backers will get access to the Beta first with 4 additional keys to participate in it. Those that pre-ordered the game already will also get 4 keys for the Beta to share with friends. In Spring 2017, the full multiplayer game will be released complete with character Tommy Jarvis and the Packanack Lodge map. By Summer 2017 the single player game is expected to be ready for release with offline AI bots to play against.
The additional content being added to the game means that the price will be increasing from $30 to $40(digital) on digital markets, however, the physical edition will remain at $60. However, if you’ve already pre-ordered the game at the original price your purchase will be honored and you will receive the single player content for no additional fee when available. An update to the virtual cabin that gives players an early look at the game’s environments is expected on October 21, 2016. The Beta is expected to release soon and those without Beta access will have to wait until Spring 2017 to experience Friday the 13th: The Game.
