Freedom Wars, an action RPG first released for the PlayStation Vita all the way back in 2014, is getting a remaster, and Freedom Wars Remastered is set to launch on modern platforms early next year.
Per a press release, Freedom Wars Remastered will arrive on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on January 10th, although there's no mention of an Xbox Series X|S version (which is a relatively common decision when it comes to Japanese games being released in the West).
The remastered version of the game will feature exactly the kind of modern improvements you'd expect; it'll support 4K and 60fps (for current-gen platforms), and it'll also feature upgraded textures, as well as revamped gameplay mechanics, new difficulty settings, and "other gameplay upgrades".
In case you're not familiar with Freedom Wars (and I honestly wouldn't blame you, given how much of a death the PlayStation Vita died), it's an action RPG with a rather intriguing premise: you are born with a one-million-year prison sentence, and you must "survive deadly missions" for the chance to reduce that sentence.
Freedom Wars takes place in a distant future and on an Earth where almost all resources have been depleted, which leads to birth essentially becoming a crime.
However, if you "volunteer in dangerous operations", you can earn a reduction in your sentence, and volunteering for enough missions could see your sentence erased completely, earning you the opportunity to live. It's fair to say Freedom Wars' setting is pretty bleak.
You can check out a trailer for the remastered version of the game, which sets up what you can expect from its dystopian premise and action-RPG combat, right here.
Freedom Wars Remastered will launch on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on January 10th. Stay tuned for more news on this one and all other things Bandai Namco.
