After more than six years of waiting, we finally have a Freedom Planet 2 release date: Tuesday, September 13, 2022. As you can probably tell, it's a sequel to Freedom Planet, which came out all the way back in July 2014, and makes its sequel's release date over eight years since its predecessor. Freedom Planet 2 has the same type of momentum combat that players loved from the first game, along with the four heroines (that are sort of grown up now). New to the second game is difficulty customization, guarding to avoid damage, and revivals for when you're being continually flattened by a boss or a tricky level.
As for the game itself, Freedom Planet 2 is a fast-paced pixel sidescrolling platformer where players become a cartoon heroine while using their abilities and items to defend Avalice's animal citizens. There's Lilac the Dragon Girl (Speed Type), Carol the Wildcat (Brawler Type), Milla the Hound (Explorer Type), and Neera the Frost Knight (Power Type), and players can choose from any of these characters.
Why was Freedom Planet 2 delayed?
The original Freedom Planet 2 release date was for this spring, but it had to be pushed back due to "unforeseen circumstances", with the biggest one being that publisher and developer Galaxy Trail wanted to release the game alongside other platforms, and the original release date meant that wouldn't happen. This is because these other platforms would require more testing and certification, so pushing it back from spring to September 13 gives Galaxy Trail the time they need. Oh, and the lead developer at Galaxy Trail has suffered a hand injury, so this gives time for the dev to go through physical therapy.
