Update (01/11/20, 4:22 PM) – Fortnite streamer Grefg has absolutely smashed the Twitch concurrent viewer record — he's currently sitting pretty at 2,335,835 viewers and climbing.

Our original story continues below.

The record for Twitch concurrent viewers has just been broken by Fortnite streamer Grefg — fans are tuning in from around the world to watch the reveal of his brand-new Fortnite skin.

Fortnite remains one of the world's most popular Battle Royale games and has been constantly updated over the last few years. Although the game itself is free, the cosmetic items that players can unlock typically cost real-world money either through a one-time purchase or as an unlock via a seasonal Battle Pass.

New cosmetics typically arrive for special events or as part of a new season of content, but that's not the only way that new goodies debut in the game.

Who is Grefg?

Grefg is a Twitch streamer with a strong focus on Fortnite. Unsurprisingly, he also happens to be involved in the game's esports scene as the co-owner of Team Heretics EU. He's a Spanish streamer, so that would explain why he might be unfamiliar to English-speaking audiences.

An absolutely insane number of people are tuning in to his stream today for one simple reason: Grefg is getting his own entry in the Fortnite Icon Series, a package of cosmetics highlighting notable entertainers within the community. Previously featured entertainers in the Fortnite Icon Series include Ninja, Loserfruit, Travis Scott, and Marshmello.

The Twitch Concurrent Viewers Record is Broken

Grefg's reveal of his Firtnote Icon Series skin has broken the record for Twitch concurrent viewers — a record that he previously held according to notable esports commentator Rod "Slasher" Breslau.

This plucky streamer has had phenomenal growth over the last year. His Twitch follower count has grown from 1.3 million in early 2020 to nearly 6 million followers today. He's averaged a respectable 37,000 concurrent viewers throughout 2020 and now he's absolutely smashed that record today — and the growth shows no signs of stopping.

Slasher's tweet was from roughly one hour ago and showed a total of 713,000 people tuning in to watch. At the time of writing, the number of viewers hit a peak of around 860,000. It's entirely possible that Grefg's stream may cross the 1 million concurrent viewer mark, although it could also level off to a lower number just as easily. You can get your hands on this cool new cosmetic (and thousands of others) by playing Fortnite for free via its official website.
