The new Fortnite "The Spy Within" LTM has arrived, tasking 8 players with attempting to complete tasks on a special map while two other players secretly try to sabotage their efforts in a game style that is strangely similar to Among Us.
Fortnite is no stranger to testing out a new style of gameplay here or there, especially with its LTM (Limited-Time Modes). Typically, these game modes will only be around for a short time and may never return. In this case, the new LTM bears a striking similarity to a wildly-popular game on Steam (and now on Nintendo Switch, too).
How is the Fortnite 'The Spy Within' LTM Like Among Us?
Naturally, players can also score some neat cosmetic rewards (shown above) by completing a series of challenges associated with this new game mode. The best way to understand the similarities between the Fortnite The Spy Within LTM and Among Us is to take a look at a quick overview of the rules:
- There are 10 players total in a match.
- 8 of the 10 players are trying to complete a series of tasks.
- 2 of the 10 players are secretly bad guys who are trying to eliminate the 8 good guys before they can complete their tasks.
- Meetings can be called to eliminate players with the ultimate goal of removing the 2 bad guys from the team.
- Players cannot communicate outside of a meeting.
- If all of the tasks get completed, the good guys win. If all of the good guys get eliminated, the bad guys win.
What I just described is essentially the rules for Among Us — and it's also the rules for this new The Spy Within LTM. One game cloning another isn't anything new — this entire industry is built on innovation and iteration. Even wholesale copies of gameplay aren't all that unusual.
Granted, Among Us isn't necessarily new itself, either. Social deduction games involving tasks have been around for some time, especially on the tabletop with games like The Resistance and Secret Hitler. It manages to take that good gameplay, give it some charming graphical flavor and world design, and turn it into something that proved surprisingly popular after a few content creators highlighted it.
This isn't the only interesting Fortnite news to drop today — recent leaks have uncovered Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Taskmaster files in the game (via ShiinaBR and @Guille_GAG), so it looks like those costumes will be likely be coming to the game sometime soon.
In any case, The Fortnite The spy Within LTM was built by a team of community content creators — specifically olphinDom, KKSlider, Bunni_, Wert, Blanky, jstKamui, MackJack, Ritual, and Snownymous — this new game mode will be making its debut today. As time goes on, more Spy Within game modes will debut every few days or so.
