The very first Valheim update has landed. It fixes a number of gameplay issues and makes some essential tweaks that should help you through the game's grueling, unforgiving survival journey.
What's in the new Valheim update?
The patch consists of two version updates: version 0.142.1 and version 0.142.5. The former is where the meat of the changes to Valheim have occurred. First up is a significant change to the game's surtling core system. Surtling cores are an essential crafting resource in the game. You'll need 5 cores each for the Charcoal Kiln and the Smelter, so you'll need 10 in total to start using metal tools. However, some players complained that dungeons either contained few or no cores. In response, developer Iron Gate has upped the number of cores you'll find in burial chambers.

Another major change concerns Odin's raven Hugin, which will occasionally drop in to help you with a hint when you've discovered something new. Hugin's hints have been increased in size, so it'll be easier to see them now, as some players were missing them. In addition, you'll now hear your character drowning. Prior to the new update, there was no feedback for this effect, which occurs when you run out of Stamina while you're swimming. The new effect is audio only; there's still no visual effect for drowning. Still, it's much better than not knowing at all.
