Warner Bros has released the very first teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie, showing off what we can expect from the upcoming video game adaptation, and it looks...well, pretty bad, to be honest.
A Minecraft Movie, for 'tis its name, will star Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge, as well as Wednesday's Emma Myers, The Color Purple's Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen of Just Mercy fame.
Momoa, Hansen, Myers, and Brooks play people from the real world who find themselves transported into a magical cubic world where creativity is king. Together with Black's Steve, they must journey through this world, protect it from monsters like Piglins and Zombies, and "reconnect" with their creative qualities.

The movie is helmed by Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, and the music comes courtesy of Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh, who also wrote the soundtracks for Thor: Ragnarok, The Lego Movie, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (together with Wataru Hokoyama in the latter case).
Honestly, if you ask me, the trailer's looking pretty rough. Sure, it's visually impressive on a surface level, but the aesthetic looks off for Minecraft; it's too high-fidelity, too polished, too clean.
That's to say nothing of the writing, which, to me, feels like your bog-standard bland Hollywood "well, that happened"-level snarky comedy. The day the Marvel Cinematic Universe stops infecting the writing approach of every other light-hearted franchise-minded movie out there will be a happy day indeed.

If you feel as I do about the trailer, then you can take solace in the fact that A Minecraft Movie isn't the only Minecraft adaptation we're getting; an animated series is also in the works over at Netflix.
For now, though, A Minecraft Movie arrives in theaters on April 2nd. I look forward to it taking roughly all the money in the world regardless of its quality.
