Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, the critically-acclaimed MMO's second expansion, is now free for all Starter Edition owners until May. Picking up the game's Starter Edition (which is distinct from the free trial) now gets you access to the Warrior of Light's journey through Ala Mhigo and Doma at no extra cost.

As Final Fantasy XIV fans await the upcoming Letter from the Producer, which airs on March 31st and contains details of Patch 6.4, now seems like a pretty good time for Square Enix to catch initiates up. That's likely the logic behind the studio's decision to offer Stormblood free for all Starter Edition players.

This campaign runs until May 8th at 7am Pacific and grants unfettered access to Stormblood. You will, of course, need a subscription to play the expansion's content, but it won't be removed from your account if your subscription lapses. It's worth noting that this promo doesn't appear to apply to the Steam version; there's no free edition of Stormblood available via that platform, so you'll need to be on PlayStation or the standalone PC version of FFXIV. Picking up the Endwalker expansion on Steam (which is 50% off at time of writing) will get you Stormblood as well, though.

Final Fantasy XIV is also currently running a free login period, during which you can head back into Eorzea and continue your adventures for free for a few days if you haven't played for a while. You'll need to have been inactive for at least 30 days, so if it's been a while since you last checked in with the Scions, now might be a good time to do so.

You can pick up Final Fantasy XIV and its latest expansion, Endwalker, on PC and PlayStation consoles right now. Starter Edition owners on PlayStation and PC (but not Steam, unfortunately) can grab Stormblood for free until May 8th.
