Final Fantasy Portal was released today, and until the end of August, it comes with a free copy of the original Final Fantasy, with some upgraded features, but as with most things, it may be too good to be true.

If you are a fan of the mega series that is Final Fantasy, no doubt you have downloaded it and are playing it right now, and not listening to me at all, but that's fine, but for once, as RPG Site have pointed out on twitter, you may want to read the fine print.

If you are on either Android or iOS, the game will download for free until the end of the month, but it wont be the same version that you can buy outright from either respective app store. It is only playable via the portal app, and is being marketed as "not compatible" with the non-Portal version, whatever that means. On top of that, if you are on Android, the game can not be reacquired for free after the end of the month if you happen to delete it or the portal app, so make sure you make backups if you want to make sure it isn't going anywhere.

It is actually really great they are giving it away for free, even if it is a limited run, but they really should be a bit more upfront about the cost changing. It is likely they mean it will only cost you if you download it after the free period has ended, but the ambiguous wording can be misinterpreted very easily.

Here is the full text of the warning, in case you missed it:

Final Fantasy Conditions

If this is something you are still interested in, its available here for iOS, and here for Android

Quick Take

I am all for a freebie, but they really need to be more upfront about these kinds of conditions. The saying "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" may apply to me here, but if the potential of costing someone money is there, they need to be 100% upfront about it, as it is completely against everything a smartphone owner would know about downloading apps.
