Just ahead of the EA Play Conference this morning, EA has released a new trailer for their upcoming annual soccer title, FIFA 20.

The trailer itself is a primary showcase of a new feature in FIFA 20, which is Volta football.

Volta football is essentially street football that is played with small groups of 3v3 rush mode (meaning no goalkeeper) 4v4 and 4v4 rush, and 5v5 professional futsal, which is playing football on a smaller, indoor hard court. Players will still be able to create their own character right down to the gear used in-game, along with clothing, hairstyles, and even tattoos to further customize your character.

Volta mode will have the player build up their small squad of footballers with their avatar, and will let players play through their online Volta League or take a pro team in Volta Kick-Off mode.

The trailer shows off some of the features of Volta, intercut with the standard FIFA 20 experience and live action football.

FIFA 20 is scheduled for release on September 27th, 2019 for all systems, but Volta mode is only available for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions of the game. The Nintendo Switch version of FIFA 20 has been dubbed a 'Legacy Edition' instead; a moniker given to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of FIFA 19.

Quick Take

Though I am not the biggest football fan, Volta mode sounds more like my speed personally. I always enjoyed the more action-arcade style sport games like NBA Jam and NHL Hitz in the past. It seems like Volta mode will be a mix of that arcade-style action at least. and with online play and character customization, it seems like a winning idea for EA.

Of course, one question to ask is if EA will implement any form of microtransactions for those cosmetics. It seems likely but so long as they aren't loot boxes and random it shouldn't be too egregious and probably less problematic then Ultimate Team.
