In an inevitable move to distance the console generations, the latest game in the FIFA franchise is set to limit the amount of things capable in the last gen (PS3/Xbox 360) versions of the game.

FIFA 17 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC is set to bring new game modes and an upgraded engine to the table  -including a full story mode called The Journey, which allows players to live the dream as a rising soccer star, utilizing 'Dragon-Age' style dialogue choices to shape the narrative. This, among some other features, look like they will be dropped from the last-gen release.

As noted in this blog post, EA has made it clear that there is still "plenty to be excited about" with the game on older consoles, and go on to list the "big changes" coming to fans of the franchise.

Squad building challenges are all new ways to gain in-game rewards and boost the skill of your team in the immensely popular Ultimate Team game mode, which is being retained and upgraded for the PS3/Xbox 360.

Further, new attacking techniques, which see the player able to create more diverse chances and finish with "low driven shots" in front of goal have been brought to the game, as well as what they're calling a "Set Piece Rewrite", in which direct and indirect free kicks as well as penalties and corners will be revamped to give the player extra control.

The all new J-League and Brazilian clubs will also be making the jump to last-gen consoles, as well as an expanded selection of international women's teams. Adapting to the new Premier League season, all new stadiums including West Ham's 'Olympic Stadium' and Middlesborough's 'Riverside' will be rendered for the game, as well as adding in new chants to make the crowds feel even more vivid when playing.

Lastly, EA also gave a list of the game modes available.

  • FIFA Ultimate Team including Squad Building Challenges
  • Career Mode
  • Be a Pro Player
  • Be a Pro Goalkeeper
  • Tournament Mode
  • Women's International Cup
