Villagers battling horrors in new survival city-builder Night Is Coming

The city-building cup runneth over, it seems. Night Is Coming is a brand new survival-city builder hybrid in which you must shore up your defences during the day, then battle horrors at night. It's coming to PC sometime next year.

What do we know about Night Is Coming?

Developer Wild Forest Studio says the world of Night Is Coming is inspired by Slavic myths and "the mystique of the Carpathian region". You'll need to build a settlement, keep your villagers happy, and stock up on resources. When night falls, creatures like banshees, werewolves, and leschies (evil wood spirits) will attack your village, and you'll need to defend yourself against them. You can check out the new Gamescom trailer for Night Is Coming, which sets the scene for the game's grim fairytale world, right here.

Rather uniquely, Wild Forest says that you'll be able to up sticks and move your settlement after defending it during the night. The more difficult the path you take to your new digs, the greater the reward will be. Ignoring challenges or taking the easy way out will result in escalating difficulty, as the monsters "[feel] your fear and [pursue] your settlers more aggressively". As if you didn't already have enough to worry about.

When is the Night Is Coming release date?

These creatures won't be at your settlement until 2022, so you'd better prepare for Night Is Coming.

At present, we don't have a more specific Night Is Coming release date than simply "2022". It's coming to PC via Steam when it does launch, and you can wishlist it right now if it looks like your jam. We'll almost certainly learn more about the Slavic folklore-inspired world of Night Is Coming in the next few weeks; it'll have a presence at the Indie Arena Booth at this year's Gamescom event, which you can check out here. This looks like one that fans of games like Frostpunk or They Are Billions will vibe with.
