Details on the next Sea of Thieves update have been revealed, including some surprisingly good news — it's had its best month yet since it first launched three years ago.

Sea of Thieves is all about hopping into a fictional world and being the best pirate you can be. You can play by yourself or with friends in this online-only game, fighting enemies and sailing oceans full of danger. Now, a brand-new update is coming tomorrow with some neat new cosmetics and a new fishing event!

Check out the video below to see what's coming in the next Sea of Thieves update!

Sea of Thieves is Undeniably a Success

Before we get into the next Sea of Thieves update, Executive Producer Joe Neate took some time to explain the state of the game. In short: Sea of Thieves is performing pretty well.

"January [2021] has been our biggest month yet in terms of [Monthly Active Users,"] Neate explains. "The most people we've had playing in a single calendar month, which is incredible seeing as we've been out nearly three years now."

The first month of 2021 also had the highest number of concurrent users since the game's original launch — it looks like the game's new Seasons system has been well-received by the playerbase. One of the highlights of its success is its current development structure. All of those lovely people working on the game are currently split between making content for the current Season and developing new content for the next one.

Sea of Thieves isn't just working on new cosmetics, though. A new event will be coming soon, and the developers are engaged in ongoing efforts to improve the game's accessibility and quality of life. One such example is the ability to easily join your friends playing the game on Steam.

Hone Your Angling Skills in The Festival of Fishing

The next Sea of Thieves update will feature the debut of The Festival of Fishing, a brand-new event that will let you unlock some pretty cool fishing rods.

The Festival of Fishing will have you traveling around the world to practice your skills at reeling in the big one. Should you succeed, you can unlock a total of four new fishing rods, each of which has its own unique cosmetic style. You can enjoy The Festival of Fishing from February 25–March 18, 2021.

Player-Run 'Armakeggon' Event Was Explosively Fun

New quality-of-life features and a new event are certainly cool, but the developers also took the time to detail an explosive community-run event: Armakeggon.

Sea of Thieves has an item called a "Keg" that can explode when it's shot. That led to a group of players having a rather interesting thought — what happens if you pile up an absurd amount of kegs and blow them all up at once?

It took roughly 36 hours for the team of players to collect all of the kegs and set them up. 46 pirates came together to cover the Sanctuary Outpost in kegs, resulting in an absolutely massive explosion that you can see above.

2021 is shaping up to be a banner year for this multiplayer pirate game! You can play the next Sea of Thieves update tomorrow, February 18, 2021. If you haven't yet jumped into the game, you can get started with Sea of Thieves by buying it on its official website starting at $39.99 or your regional equivalent.
