The creators of ambitious Fallout 4 mod Fallout: Vault 13 have announced that they're indefinitely suspending development on the project owing to "a combination of factors".

In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the mod's developers say that the decision to suspend development was "not an easy decision", but that it was "the right step at this stage of our journey".

In the coming weeks, the developers say they'll "release a full build of Fallout: Vault 13" that shows off the work they've done on the project so far, as well as unfinished content, so that anyone else "interested in continuing or building upon it in the future" can have access to it.

Fallout: Vault 13 is no more, unfortunately.

Fallout: Vault 13's creators also say they're going to release a "retrospective" at some point in the future that will take a look at "the highs, the lessons learned, and the passion that drove this project".

As for the reason for the mod's cancellation, the devs explain their motivation (or lack thereof) in a followup message, attributing the suspension of development to a number of factors including burnout, recruitment issues, and "personal life changes among core team members".

Unlike other prominent fan endeavors, the mod's developers say there was no cease and desist from the IP owner (in this case Bethesda), nor was there any "infighting" between project developers.

Instead, the mods rather even-handedly say that the mod was "an ambitious project being made with limited resources by volunteers", and that in order to preserve "the well-being of project members", the suspension decision was made.

If you're not familiar with Fallout: Vault 13, it was an ambitious attempt to recreate the entirety of the original Fallout in the engine of Fallout 4, complete with the more recent game's emphasis on real-time gameplay rather than turn-based combat.

It's one of a number of ambitious Fallout fan projects; others include Fallout: London, another Fallout 4 mod that lets players explore post-apocalyptic London, and a major Fallout: New Vegas gun mod pack that aims to overhaul the game's animations.
