Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S Release Date Announced

Last year at the Oculus Connect 5, Facebook announced their first standalone Oculus VR headset, the Oculus Quest, which will not require a PC or mobile device, running on its own hardware as an "all-in-one VR gaming system." They also announced some exclusive games for both the Oculus Quest and the original Oculus Rift. Later in 2018, it was also announced that Oculus VR is no longer an autonomous company, having been assimilated by the Facebook Technologies division. Last month Facebook announced the next iteration of the Oculus Rift, the Oculus Rift S, which will include several improvements over the original version of the device.

Today at the F8 2019 developers conference, they have announced that both the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Rift S headsets will release on May 21, 2019, and are now available for pre-order directly from the Oculus website. You can pre-order the Oculus Quest here and the Oculus Rift S here. Both devices cost $399, but the Oculus Rift S requires a PC that is VR-ready, while the Oculus Quest doesn't. It is also possible to order a $499 version of the Oculus Quest with 128 GB of storage, while the $399 version has 64GB. Included with the headset you also get two touch controllers, a 15 W power adapter, AA batteries, and a frame-friendly spacer. And included with the Oculus Rift S you also get two touch controllers, a headset cable, AA batteries, and video output. A separate accessory is also available for the Oculus Quest, a $40 travel case to fit the headset, as well as the controllers and charging cables.

A new feature that powers these new VR headsets is Facebook's new Insight tracking system, which uses the headsets' cameras to track the room and your movement in it. The touch controllers are also the very same for both headsets.

The announcement of the release date took place in the same day as Valve announced they will open pre-orders for their new Valve Index VR headset on May 1st, as well as their first dedicated VR game as a flagship title.
