Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice will be making its way to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on July 31, 2018, according to a video uploaded on Ninja Theory's YouTube channel.
Ninja Theory's latest title Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a tale of love and a woman beset by many troubles. A psychosis has alienated her from her clan, and the only man to ever love her has died. Rather than spend the rest of her life alone, Senua decides to take her husband's head to the underworld to get him brought back to life. The game's interesting mechanics and great story atmosphere were two of the game's many strengths that our review talked about in detail. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice sold 50,000 copies in its first week on Xbox One and placed in the 2017 TechRaptor Awards for Best Writing and Indie Game of the Year.
Ninja Theory had to employ a number of tricks to make Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice work well in VR.In the time since its release, Ninja Theory has been hard at work adapting the game to a VR environment. That work has finally come to fruition and players won't have to wait too much longer to get their hands on the VR version of the game. It won't be a standalone edition or anything like that—VR support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive is being pushed as a free update to owners of the game on Steam. Unfortunately, the developers recommend a rather hefty graphics card for it to run well: a GTX 1080 or better. Those technical requirements also mean that the VR version won't be coming to the PlayStation VR.
The video goes into a good bit of detail about what it took to adapt this particular title to VR and the lessons that Ninja Theory learned during the process. It's a worthwhile watch if you're interested in the kind of work that goes into game development, especially when tricky problems emerge like figuring out new controls in a completely different environment. If you don't yet already own Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, you can pick it up for yourself on Steam or on the Humble Store for $29.99 or your regional equivalent. VR support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will be added to the game as a free update on July 31, 2018.
