Euro Truck Simulator 2 1.15 Patch to Include Better Truck Sounds?

Published: November 5, 2014 10:45 PM /

The audio realism in SCS Software's Euro Truck Simulator 2 was something of a gray area for many of the game's fans. Some have enjoyed the experience, saying it's akin to actually sitting at the dashboard of a real truck. Others weren't so enthusiastic, describing sounds as relatively bland or, as a friend put it, "That Renault truck sounds like a rickety old vacuum cleaner."

Indeed, many of the complaints about Euro Truck Simulator 2's audio do not seem to be directed at the Scania or Volvo brands of trucks available in-game. Rather, the complaints seem to come from people who either occasionally or frequently drive brands like Iveco, Renault, MAN, and "Majestic" (Mercedes, forced into the closet because intellectual property laws are lovely). It's very difficult to translate what you record into something that resembles the actual truck's sound, but it looks like SCS software is taking the effort to improve the sounds for the game in the future.

In their blog, SCS Software writes: "New recording setup allows our sound engineer to capture humming of the engine and noises in detail previously not available in our game."

The company makes it clear that the entire system is going to be refined, and that new audio samples will be added in future updates. The reason this will go beyond the 1.14 patch rather than being included in it is because there's a whole lot of work involved in revamping the audio system. According to SCS Software, "The whole truck sound system is being refined, which involves changes in programming, in data structures, and of course lots of new sfx files."

At this point, they have admitted to recording sounds during the past two weeks for the Iveco Stralis Hi-Way and the new Mercedes Actros 1845.

Does this mean we can anticipate a 1.15 patch with awesome mind-blowing sounds out of this earth? Does it mean that the Iveco Stralis will finally sound like a truck in that patch? My own speculation based on experience while monitoring the release structure and differences between when a change is announced and it is applied tell me that we may possibly see version 1.15 include the new audio effects, with the possibility of the changes being bumped over to 1.16. Now, with regards to the Iveco Stralis, I certainly hope so. Of course, the Iveco's sound is far from the main reason why people avoid driving it. You're really not cool unless you drive a Scania or a Volvo.
