ESA Pitches Plans for E3 2020, Includes Industry-Only Day and "Experience" Floor Plan

Its time for a change. It's no secret that last year E3 was kind of lame. It seems the ESA is trying to revitalize the show for E3 2020, and has some plans for doing so. In a pitch acquired by GameDaily.biz, we get to learn some of those plans.

The goal is to try and rebrand E3 to be more of a festival instead of a convention. The idea seems to be to make "experiences" that will draw crowds. Some of the suggested experiences include having actors compete in a games tournament, and having members of the Los Angeles Lakers play a basketball video game in front of fans. The goal is to create buzz for attendees, and get them to talk about the events, which will create more buzz for the show itself.

In addition to this, the ESA wants to turn Tuesday into an industry only day, allowing media and industry access to everything without the general public being there. In both 2018 and 2019 the first three hours of Tuesday and Wednesday were already industry only hours, but this would make it an entire day, similar to what Gamescon does in Germany. The ESA also wants to approve an addition 10,000 general public passes, which would mean a full day of industry only would be much more appreciated. To curtail the massive lines that normally come with such a crowd increase, there's also plans to make an app that will let you save your place and come back during a specific time window.

Another plan is to try and get some new partnerships. The ESA points towards the show Tech Impact as an example of what they'd like to do, and how they funded the show. Basically, programming that would be used to highlight events and news that would happen on the show floor. Of course, the show is not actually marked as sponsored programming in any way, so there are some questions on this plan, especially given the emphasis on content control.

E3 2020 will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 9th to June 11th. We'll probably be there.
