In a surprise move, Hi-Rez Studios have released every single title in the Tribes franchise for free on their website as the studio celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the series. This comes on the heels of Hi-Rez announcing that they would be supporting their title Tribes: Ascend with its first update in over two years, which is hopefully a reaffirmation that the studio is serious about resuming its support of the title and for the franchise itself.

Here is the list of titles that are up for download:

  • Earthsiege (1994)
  • Earthsiege 2 (1996)
  • Starsiege: Tribes (1998)
  • Tribes 2 (2001)
  • Tribes: Aerial Assault (2002)
  • Tribes: Vengeance (2004)
  • Tribes: Ascend (Which has been free to play since they launched it back in 2012)

Interestingly, Tribes: Aerial Assault was a PS2 exclusive, the only title out of this package that is not a PC release. This means that if one wanted to play the title they would have to use an emulator, as it would not work 'out the box' so to speak, although they do provide the iso file for download on their website.

Quick Take:

This is a great move for Hi-rez to garner both good-will and attention to Tribes and as it attempts to resurrect the franchise for the second time. This will definitely be an up-hill battle, but with the success of Hi-Rez's MOBA Smite, it appears that the studio can now afford to go back and work with a game that does not necessarily make enough money to survive, but enough to warrant assigning a team to put through the occasional update for Tribes: Ascend. Who knows, as perhaps the second time will be the charm for the beleaguered free-to-play shooter.

What do you think of Hi-rez's recent support of the Tribes franchise? Do you think they will continue to support Tribes: Ascend? If you were one of the players burned by them there, what will it take to earn your trust back? Let us know in the comments below!
