Earthworm Jim is a beloved side-scrolling platformer that debuted on the Sega Genesis in 1994, going through several ports and sequels thereafter. The last titles in the franchise were Earthworm Jim 3D and Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy for the Game Boy for the Nintendo 64, respectively. In 2010 there was a remaster, Earthworm Jim HD, a remake of the 1994 original. Since then, there have been plans to develop a new game, with one of these projects being canceled in 2007, originally planned for the PlayStation Portable.
Last year we saw the announcement of a new video game console, the Intellivision Amico, which aims to be quite simply an old-school console for modern audiences and systems. You can find out more about the console on the official website.
Now, it has just been announced that the original team that developed Earthworm Jim is reuniting to develop a brand new game in the franchise exclusively for the upcoming console. Ten of the game's original programmers, artists, audio and level designers will participate in the mission to bring back the uniqueness and humor of the original Earthworm Jim for new audiences and a new gaming system.
And to celebrate this reunion with fans, there will be a 20-minute live interactive simulcast streaming event on May 4th at 12 PM PST during the very first design meeting with the original team. The members of the team hope to engage with fans so they can hear about their new vision firsthand. There will also be a giveaway of multiple original art pieces hand-drawn by the team's artists and signed by the entire team to some of the people watching the stream. Apart from that, they will also give away 50 brand new Earthworm Jim posters, also signed and numbered, as live chat prizes.
Tommy Tallarico, Intellivision Entertainment CEO/President, as well as the original composer and sound designer of Earthworm Jim 1-2, talked about the project with enthusiasm.
We have been talking about this moment for many years, it’s a dream come true to finally get the entire team back together. We’re looking forward to sharing a small part of our reunion and initial design meeting with fans from around the world. Intellivision Amico is designed to bring friends and families together and we are excited for fans and those just being introduced to the series to get a first look as we kick-off the design of the game.Star Wars actor John Boyega raved about the announcement on Twitter:
