Remember back at TGS, when we reported that Earth Defense Force 5 was coming to Japan this year? Well, D3 Publisher has recently shed some light (much as the insect menace might shed their old skins) that the title will release this Summer on PlayStation 4 in Japan. All jokes aside, Earth Defense Force 5 looks to be more of the same, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. Recently the company also uploaded a new trailer for the title (embedded below), detailing the game's B-movie style story, some new gameplay, as well as some new enemy types coming to the title - including giant humanoid alien soldiers, with destructible armor?
The previously released Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair did end up getting a Steam PC release last year, and D3 Publisher has expressed interest in bringing more of their titles to PC - but much like a potential Earth Defense Force 5 localization, so far the company has released no news regarding it as of yet. That being said, it probably wouldn't be too surprising to see both of those panning out in the future, to be announced at a later date. For now, however, the next chance players will have to shoot Giant Mutant Space Bees with Big Freaking Guns will be when Earth Defense Force 5 releases in Japan exclusively on PlayStation 4 this summer. We'll keep you updated on more news as it continues to come in.
Quick Take
EDF! EDF! EDF! All in-jokes aside, Earth Defense Force has always been a fun yet low-budget series, that really thrives off of its absolutely corny presentation. I can only hope that XSEED gets the rights to bring this one west later this year - they did a fantastic job with both EDF 4.1 and EDF 2's translations. Special props go to their English Dubs of both titles (you can tell that the voice actors really had fun with their lines!) as well as Earth Defense Force 2's subtitle - Invaders from Planet Space. Simply beautiful.
