Star Wars Battlefront II

After a massive backlash, Electronic Arts has announced that they will be making changes to the progression system found in Star Wars: Battlefront 2.

The system was heavily criticized after players participated in the open beta for Battlefront 2, which saw gameplay unlocks tied to loot crates that were either earned in-game or purchasable with real money. Some of the points of contention were previously addressed by EA, who stated that a number of tweaks and balance changes would be implemented into the game before launch.

The changes point to the implementation of Epic Star Cards; items which unlock particular abilities for your character's loadout. Previously, these high-tier items were random drops in various loot boxes, but have been removed from loot boxes entirely and are now only available through in-game crafting. To help balance the game, players need to attain a certain rank before being allowed to craft more powerful Star Cards.

Class progression is also changed from the beta, where crates would drop a random array of items across all the classes, regardless of which class you played. EA has changed this as well, stating that playing your favored class will unlock crates specific to them, eliminating the need for excessive grinding and earning items and gear that don't pertain to your favored class.

EA DICE also noted that most weapons, save for a few exceptions, are locked behind progression goals for their respective classes. This too eliminates the need for excessive grinding.

All three of these issues were primary complaints by many who participated in the Battlefront 2 beta, but the game will still contain loot boxes and a form of microtransactions. The changes to character progression, however, appear to emphasize time played in the game over spending extra money for the chance of a random star card or weapon drop.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will be released on November 17th for the Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4.
