It's National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and EA is taking part. If you turn on EA Login Verification this month, you'll receive a free month of Origin Access Basic in return.

EA Login Verification is essentially a process by which EA authenticates that it's really you logging into your account. To do so, EA will use a code in conjunction with your password. If you don't have the code and the password, you won't be able to log in. EA hopes this will deter potential fraudsters from stealing your info (or worse, your games). To find out how to turn on EA Login Verification, just click here.

In a statement released discussing the decision, Rosemary O'Neill, director of Customer Delivery for NuData Security (a Mastercard company) had this to say about videogames and National Cybersecurity Awareness Month:

The gaming industry has been hit hard by bad actors who are constantly trying to engineer new ways of bypassing security measures. We expect more online companies to follow this lead and offer a bonus to customers to implement greater security measures even though it might prove less convenient. At the same time, companies will need to clearly communicate to the consumer why the additional steps are needed for their protection.

Rosemary goes on to explain two-factor authentication. Effectively, two-factor authentication offers better protection due to its use of passive biometric and behavioral analytics. These systems make it more difficult for attacks to succeed. They're essentially putting the trust in the human and not the device, devaluing things like stolen credentials.

You can choose how to get your Login Verification codes sent to you. The four methods available are as follows: email, text, phonecall, or app authenticator. You can have any number of these options active, and the more you have turned on, the more options you'll have to verify your identity. EA says you can also "write down your backup codes" and keep them in a safe place to use anytime.

Here's how to redeem your free Origin Access Basic month. Just turn on EA Login Verification anytime during the month of October and you'll get a month of Origin Access Basic for free. It won't kick off until on or after November 1st. Naturally, you'll need to install Origin before you can take advantage of your free month. If you're already an Origin Access Basic member, you won't be charged for November. Premier subscribers will get a free month of Premier instead. In addition, if you've already got EA Login Verification enabled, you'll get a free Origin Access month whether you're currently subscribed or not.

If you want to read the full terms and conditions, you can do so here. EA says it's "up to you" to maintain your account's security, so it's worth doing this. Hey, who can turn their nose up at a month of free games, right?
