After a lengthy trailer was shown at the PlayStation E3 conference, God of War Director Cory Barlog spoke more about the game and the specifics of the demo on the YouTube Live at E3 channel.

Barlog began by addressing the difference between last years announcement trailer and this years showing. saying that the reveal trailer was designed to reintroduce the God of War, make a statement, and focus on a single moment. In contrast, this year's trailer showed gameplay and cinematics from various parts of the game and Sony Santa Monica's Creative Director tells us that being closer to release they wanted to show more, giving fans a sense of what the "journey" will be and reinforcing the relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus.

Barlog confirmed that the boat shown in the trailer would be controllable and that it will be the primary method of moving through the world at times. He also told viewers that there will be more of a focus on exploration and discovery this time around but explained that this will be still be a fairly linear world, focused on storytelling, as with previous God of War titles.

The Director also spoke about the combat that was shown, the team are going for fast and fluid action as in previous games and also wanted to give a sense of a vast and dangerous world for Kratos and his son to travel through. Kratos and Atreus will be travelling together, so while Kratos will primarily be attacking with his axe and frost powers shown in the trailer, Atreus can provide assists with his bow.

Interestingly, during the interview Barlog confirmed that the demo shown at the Sony conference was running on a standard PS4, so rather than a graphical downgrade from an E3 demo, fans might even see a graphical upgrade if they're playing on a PS4 Pro.

Speaking on the balancing of story, combat, and puzzles in the game, Barlog told the interviewer that he feels God of War has always been "that classic kind of action-adventure where you sort of meld between the combat, the puzzling elements, the story elements" and that this installment would be no different. The Creative Director ended the interview by revealing that the 'World Serpent' seen at the end of the trailer is a friend rather than a foe and that your interactions with it might be "unexpected."
