If you're anything like me, it pleases you to hear about a new flagship racing sim coming out in the coming year. This year's Forza comes in the form of Forza Motorsport 7, seeing as Horizon had its turn last year. With the revelation of the new Xbox One X, it comes as no surprise that series of one of the Xbox One's major launch titles would be upgraded on the new Xbox One X to flex the new console's muscle, especially after Turn 10 was the studio that demoed the Xbox One X for Digital Foundry.

At the Microsoft press conference this year, it was revealed that the Xbox One X version of Forza 7 will run at native 4K while maintaining 60 frames per second. Quite the impressive feat for a console running a game that will be even more detailed than last year's Forza Horizon 3, which itself was a beautiful and detailed open world racer. Following the press conference though, Forza 7 creative director Bill Giese supplied more details during YouTube live coverage of E3.

Building with the Xbox One X in mind allowed the developers to push the game much further than previous installments in Forza. Turn 10 revamped the lighting engine and upgraded the dynamic cubemaps. The Xbox One X version will have 4K textures to complement the 4K resolution. In addition, every single car in the roster of over 700 was given the once over, adding in small details that otherwise would have been skipped with developing in a lower power console in mind - Giese mentions the netting in the racing GT-R shown in the press conference as an example. The weather system has been thoroughly upgraded since Forza 6, adding in dynamic, expanding puddles with dynamic weather, allowing clouds to come into blot out what would have been a perfectly fine day of racing to literally rain on your future victory parade in real time. Photogrammetry was used in the development of Forza 7, a technique in which development tools use photos to map geometry to reproduce real locations.

Also, if you're a fan of Maple Valley, that track will finally make its triumphant return.

Turn 10 is absolutely taking advantage of their partnership with Porsche, boasting what they claim to be the largest selection of Porsche cars in any racing game, on top of Lamborghinis and Ferraris.

Forza Motorsport 7 is headed to Xbox One and Windows 10 on October 3rd, 2017. The Xbox One X patch will be released on November 7th. Forza Motorsport 7 will be an Xbox Play Anywhere title - a digital purchase will mean you can play on both Xbox One and Windows 10.
