Strikers Edge

Fun Punch Games, a Portuguese-based independent development team, will be presenting Strikers Edge at the upcoming E3 2016.  Originally a Game Jam project, the 8bit pixel art-styled Strikers Edge has received praise as well as winning the Portuguese PlayStation Award.

Gameplay focuses around ranged combat, with each player using one of eight unique "strikers" that have their own unique play style and benefits.  Players can choose between one-on-one combat, or partner up with a friend in two-on-two combat; multiplayer is supported both locally and online.  Combat in Strikers Edge takes place on one of four different arenas, each with their own hazards for players to take advantage of.  Fun Punch Games has made a teaser trailer available, which can be viewed below.

Online gameplay will be ranked, with new weapons and character skins available to unlock to players.

While Strikers Edge has been confirmed for a 2016 release, Fun Punch Games has not given an exact release date for their first title.  Strikers Edge will be available on both the PlayStation 4 as well as Steam.

Quick Take

I'm interested in this game.  It's always refreshing to see new games done in a retro style, and I think that Fun Punch Games made the most of it for their first title.  The arena artwork is very well done, but if I had any complaints, it's on the number of arenas.  I think that four is too small a number to offer players much variety, and might limit replay value.  Maybe Fun Punch Games has more arenas waiting in the wings, or has plans on creating more post-release?  Hopefully, gameplay is interesting enough in the mean time.
