During Sony’s E3 press conference this year, Sony revealed the game Farpoint for the first time. Farpoint is a PlayStation VR exclusive game being developed by Impulse Gear, a brand new development studio that was made specifically to develop virtual reality games. In a PlayStation Blog post, the development team later revealed that Farpoint will be the first PlayStation VR game to use the newly announced PlayStation VR Aim Controller.

The PlayStation VR Aim Controller is a PlayStation VR peripheral designed specifically for first-person shooters like Farpoint. Most importantly, it is a fully fledged controller as well. It’s not like Sony’s Sharpshooter, which was just a case for you to slide two PlayStation Move controllers into. Indeed, the Sharpshooter isn't cross-compatible with the Aim Controller with games having to put in separate programming support for each, as demonstrated by the fact that Impulse Gear's Farpoint doesn't support the Sharpshooter. The Aim Controller has everything the DualShock 4 has. It has two analogue sticks, two triggers, two bumpers, four face buttons, and a D-pad. Heck, it even has a Share button, Options button, and a button mapped to replace the DualShock 4’s touchpad. When you use the PlayStation VR Aim Controller, you don’t have to use any other controller along with it. Also, if you heard that it didn't have rumble features, you heard wrong there according to Impulse Gear.
There are also a couple of other key facts to take note of concerning the PlayStation VR Aim Controller. First, lefties will be happy to hear that the Aim Controller is completely ambidextrous. There is an R1 button above the trigger on both sides of the peripheral, making it possible to reload your gun using either hand. Next, the Aim Controller offers 1 to 1 tracking, meaning that the way you move the Aim Controller will be reflected immediately and precisely in the game you are playing.
As of right now, Farpoint is the only game that is set to use the PlayStation VR Aim Controller. However, I think it’s safe to say that future PS VR first-person shooters are likely to support the tech moving forward. There is currently no release date for Farpoint or the Aim Controller, but we do know that PlayStation VR will be launching on October 13th of this year and will cost $399 US dollars.
