NieR: Automata finally made an appearance at E3 as Square Enix and Sony released an official gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated game.
The trailer shows of the protagonist of NieR: Automata, an android named 2B, as she brings the fight to the alien "machine lifeforms" that now dominate the planet. Humanity, forced to take refuge on the moon is using 2B and her party of androids, known as the YoHRa, to take on the alien machines and retake planet Earth.
The trailer shows off 2B, and other party members 9S and A2, fighting hordes of robots as the war between the androids and machines rages in the background, including what appears to be boss battles thrown in the mix.
The gameplay looks crisp and fluid, much like other Platinum titles, and 2B is equipped with some cool weapons and abilities to help combat the machines, including her sword and the "Pod" support system for ranged attacking. Square Enix describes 2B as cool, calm and collected- the perfect combination for an android soldier.
NieR: Automata is the second game in the NieR series, which itself is a spinoff series to the Drakengard games. Director Taro Yoko, the director of the first NieR game, is spearheading the project with a joint effort between developer Platinum Games and publisher Square Enix. NieR: Automata is being designed as more of an action game over an RPG, but it will retain some role-playing elements, according to Yoko. Combat will mostly be up close and with hand to hand weapons, with some shooting elements thrown in. Finally, weapon stories, a staple in both the NieR and Drakengard series, is scheduled to make a return as well.
NeiR: Automata will be a Playstation 4 exclusive, and will be released in early 2017. Remember, you can find more of our E3 coverage at our E3 2016 Coverage Hub.
