E3 2016 - Hideo Kojima Discusses Death Stranding

Sony E3 2016 Death Stranding

Following the reveal of his newest title at the Sony E3 2016 conference, Hideo Kojima sat down to discuss Death Stranding in more detail.  The below video is the complete interview Kojima gave yesterday.

While there's a lot of information in that interview, there are a few bits that are of immediate interest to those eagerly awaiting Death Stranding.

First and foremost, Kojima Productions hasn't decided on an engine yet for use, although there are a couple of candidates that are being closely considered. Development of Death Stranding will "probably take some time", as highlighted some by the fact that there still isn't an engine chosen.

Movie director Guillermo del Toro, who was going to work with Kojima on the cancelled PlayStation 4 title Silent Hills, will not be collaborating with Kojima Productions on Death Stranding - at least for the time being.

On being asked what type of game Death Stranding would be, Kojima answered that he couldn't give specifics at the time, but that players who played many action games would find Death Stranding's gameplay very natural. He added that after two to four hours of playing, that the game would feel completely different than what they were used to playing.

For now, Kojima is keeping a tight lip on Death Stranding's characters, setting, and plot, and wants players to make their own assumptions and ideas based on what was in the trailer.

As for the game's name?  It's a reference to when large numbers of dolphins and whales are stranded on a beach.  When they're alive, it's called a "live stranding", and when they're dead a "death stranding".  Kojima adds that the title specifically means "that something from some world comes, and is stranded".

The trailer for the game, shown during the Sony E3 2016 conference, can be viewed below.

Quick Take

I would be lying if I said I wasn't extremely hyped for this game.  I grew up with both the Metal Gear and Silent Hill franchises, and what Konami did to both is absolutely appalling.  I'm extremely happy that Kojima is in a position now where he has complete control over his works, and I think this really shows that he's not letting his previous experiences weigh him down.  Everything about Death Stranding reminds me of his earlier works.  Next to the new Resident Evil game, this is what I was happiest to see at Sony's conference.

What are your thoughts on Death Stranding?  How do you think it compares to Kojima's earlier titles when he worked for Konami, and the other titles announced at Sony E3 2016?  Let us know in the comment section below!
