During Saturday's Tokyo Game Show Online online stream, Koei Techmo revealed the Dynasty Warriors release date, which is set for February 15, 2022. It's been six years since Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires was released, so fans have been waiting for the next installment in this series for a while. As this is a Dynasty Warriors title, you can expect Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires to arrive on every modern console you can think of, which means its coming to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, Windows PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, and digitally on the PlayStation 5. If you buy the PS4 version you'll receive a free PS5 upgrade at no additional cost, which is something certain parties should pay attention to for future releases.
Given that Dynasty Warriors 9 wasn't well-received, you would be forgiven for asking what's different this time for its spinoff. Well, the Dynasty Warriors Empires series is basically Dynasty Warriors with strategic and tactical elements mixed in. So, while you still have the 1 vs 1000 battles the main series is known for, Empires has the player put some more thought into what exactly they're doing and how they're going to win the next battle, as it takes inspiration from other Koei Tecmo series like Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
So what's new in this iteration of the Empires spinoff series? Well, there's a feature new to the Dynasty Warrior Empires series called "Storming the Castle", which means player's quest to conquer ancient China will be a little different this time around. How? Well, areas around castles are now turned into battlefields and skirmishes now mean that you'll encounter "Storming the Castle" battles, with players fighting to take control of the castle.
Along with "Storming the Castle", will also be able to use "Siege Battles with Troops", which means you'll invade the enemy's base and taking advantage of your siege weapons while giving instructions to your troops during the battle. Once players break through the enemy gates, they will enter the "Decisive Battle", where victory can be claimed after defeating the enemy commander. All enemy officers will also re-join the battle during this phase, and players will have a chance to defeat and capture them.
There are also "Secret Plans", which have their own conditions for success and failure. Basically, you select it during the battle preparation phase and once its successfully completed you'll receive favorable effects such as "capture surrounding bases", "defeat messengers", escort the engineers", and more. Each battle will give players the opportunity to activate "Secret Plans" and earn the bonuses that it offers. Beware, though, because the enemy can use "Secret Plans" as well.
Army Affinity is also something you'll have to keep track of, as all the units have their own strengths and witnesses: Infantry < Archer < Cavalry < Infantry. If a unit faces an opponent that they have an advantage over, more damage can be given and the damage taken can be reduced. Be smart in-game, basically, and you'll be rewarded with this rock-paper-scissors-based affinity system.
