Update: A trailer for Dungeons 4 has now appeared. It's full of rather enchanting CGI, and although it doesn't contain any Dungeons 4 gameplay, we do now know that the game is also coming to consoles and will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one. It doesn't get much more official than that. Original story follows below.
Original story: If you've been hoping for a new installment in the Dungeons series, then it looks like you're in luck. The existence of Dungeons 4 seems to have been leaked through an official Steam page for the game, which has appeared without any fanfare or official announcement from publisher Kalypso.
What do we know about Dungeons 4?
It's been five years since the last Dungeons game, so if you're a fan of the franchise, you're probably thinking that we're overdue for a new installment. Luckily, it looks like you're getting your wish. A Steam page for Dungeons 4 has mysteriously appeared, accompanied by precisely zero explanation on the part of publisher Kalypso or developer Realmforge (which is wholly owned by Kalypso). If I had to guess, I'd say there's an official Dungeons 4 announcement coming during this week's Gamescom, and someone has mistakenly uploaded the Steam page early.
The Steam page for Dungeons 4 promises that the new game "keeps the spirit of its predecessor", but that everything is now bigger, better, "and with even more dynamic Evilness". Just like in previous Dungeons games, you'll need to build and maintain your dungeon, catering for your creatures' needs (but never letting them forget who's boss, of course). You'll amass Evilness and let it loose upon the vile plains and forests of the Overworld in order to convert them to your evil empire. Of course, you'll also need to make sure your dungeon is well-defended, because the people you're subjugating won't take it lying down.
When is the official Dungeons 4 announcement coming?
We'll almost certainly learn more about Dungeons 4 as we draw closer to an official announcement, which shouldn't be too far away given that the Steam page looks ready for primetime. It also looks like publisher Kalypso has teased the game on social media; earlier today, the studio posted a tweet showing an armored hand reaching for the word "Gamescom". Kalypso says in the tweet that it "can't wait to bring some Evilness to Gamescom", so that's pretty much a guarantee that we'll be getting a Dungeons 4 announcement this week.
If you've yet to check out the Dungeons franchise, you can go back and play 2017's Dungeons 3 right now. It's a pretty solid alternative to the classic Dungeon Keeper games, especially given that EA now seems content to either milk that franchise for all it's worth or just kill it outright. You can also wishlist Dungeons 4 ahead of its inevitable official announcement this week.
