Giant robot fans rejoice - Dreamworks Voltron VR Chronicles has been announced for the PlayStation VR according to the official PlayStation Blog.

For those who didn't grow up watching giant cartoon robots, Voltron: Defender of the Universe centered on a set of five feline robots that could combine into the titular mech and fight the forces of evil in outer space. Originally based on the Japanese series Beast King GoLion, the 1984 animation repurposed the original animation for a somewhat unrelated plot in a similar vein to the treatment of shows such as Robotech and Power Rangers. The franchise has had a number of series since the first foray into American television, the most recent being Voltron: Legendary Defenders which is a joint venture between Netflix and Dreamworks Entertainment.

This latest series is the basis for Dreamworks Voltron VR Chronicles, a product developed by Digital Domain in collaboration with Universal Brand Development. A trailer has been released to give players an idea of what the game will play like on the PlayStation VR:

Gamers will take on the role of Lance, the Blue Paladin, as he's placed in the midst of the conflict between Voltron and the dastardly forces of the Gaira Emperor Zarkon.

All of the voice actors from the Netflix series have reprised their role for this upcoming PlayStation VR game. The series' showrunners have lent their talents as well, ensuring that the plot of the game stays on track with what you would expect to see from an episode of the series. The game makes use of cel-shading style graphics reminiscent of the show, and cutscenes take place in 360° VR so players can experience things a bit deeper than a flat animation.

Dreamworks Voltron VR Chronicles is available for pre-purchase on the official PlayStation Store for $11.99 or your regional equivalent, discounted from its retail price of $14.99. It releases on September 26, 2017. If you don't yet own a PlayStation VR, you may be interested to learn that the bundles are dropping in price effective September 1, 2017.
