Dragon Quest Builders

The first footage for the new spin-off title in the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest Builders, released on the official Japanese website. The game is exclusive to Playstation platforms (Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita), and bares a striking resemblance to the world famous Minecraft series. The first footage can be seen below.

In the footage we see how the game plays (unsurprisingly a lot like Minecraft.) Players gather resources (like wood, dirt, rock, etc.) to craft weapons, tools, and furniture, etc. In the game, players are tasked with rebuilding the world after it's been conquered by the Dragonlord. The video also showed off some combat, fighting slimes with a sword and even placing down resources to create make-shift cover from spell attacks.

A lot of news surrounding the Dragon Quest series came today, as Square Enix held an hour and 40 minute long conference for Dragon Quest games. In it, Square Enix officially announced Dragon Quest 11, an offline console game, as well as making announcements for Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy of the End. Dragon Quest Heroes II will feature a different setting than Dragon Quest Heroes, as well as a new story, enhanced offensive and defensive actions, the giant monsters, and the crowds players fight. Like Dragon Quest BuildersDragon Quest Heroes II is in development for all Playstation platforms in Japan during Spring 2016.

The big story in the conference came with the "announcement" that Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI would both be coming to Nintendo's upcoming dedicated gaming console codenamed: NX. Square Enix later redacted this, claiming that Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI were only "Under consideration" for the possible Wii U successor. If this is true, it could mean a potential 2016 release date for the system.

While the game is announced for Playstation Vita, it is unknown if it will work with Playstation TV.

What are your thoughts on Dragon Quest Builders? Is it a cheap knock off, or a better looking version of Minecraft? Or are the comparisons unwarranted and the game stands on its own? Let us know in the comments below!
