The upcoming fighting game based on one of the most iconic action anime of all time is indulging in the loot box trend that’s hit the industry. Dragon Ball FighterZ, developed by Arc System Works and published by Bandai Namco, will feature loot boxes that come in the form of Z Capsules, with each capsule containing cosmetic items for characters and unique lobby avatars.
These capsules can only be purchased through two in-game currencies, neither of which are purchasable with real money at this time. Zeni is earned after every battle, while Premium Z Coins are earned whenever a player receives a duplicate item from a loot box. At the time of writing, no plan has been revealed to monetize either form of in-game currency.
As with previous Arc System titles, such as Guilty Gear Xrd, each fighter has a plethora of different costumes to wear in each fight, most of which being palette swaps. It’s likely that the cosmetic options found in Dragon Ball FighterZ will be in a similar vein.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2-D fighting game that pits two teams of three fighters against each other. Although the characters fight on a 2D plane, their models are rendered in 3D, similar to Guilty Gear Xrd. The game features an all-star cast of characters from the franchise, and the roster has 24 members, including the recently revealed Android 21.
The game has garnered a lot of buzz in the fighting game community, and a beta version of it was featured at EVO 2017. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the full version of the game make its return to EVO this year.
