Id Software has announced that its plans for Doom Eternal Invasion Mode have changed — instead, it will be creating Doom Eternal Horde Mode for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, and we'll be learning more about this change at QuakeCon 2021.

Doom Eternal recently released Update 6 which enhances the graphics of the game, especially on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. This update adds support for 4K gaming and ray tracing on consoles, but it didn't have much in the way of new gameplay content. Now, Id Software has revealed what its plans are for the next wave of major gameplay additions.

What is Doom Eternal Horde Mode (and What Happened to Invasion Mode)?

It looks like Doom Eternal Horde Mode is going to effectively serve as a replacement for Doom Eternal Invasion Mode following a range of feedback from the game's players.

"As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game; however, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition," read an article from Id Software Executive Producer Marty Stratton. "Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels. With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode."

No further details were shared about this new Doom Eternal Horde Mode. However, Stratton explained that we'll be learning more details when QuakeCon 2021 launches this August.

This won't be the only change on the way, mind — a refresh of Battlemode and other gameplay and balance updates are still in the works. For now, you can enjoy all of the fun by buying Doom Eternal for PC via Steam starting at just $14.99 or your regional equivalent as part of the Steam Summer Sale; otherwise, you can buy the game on other platforms via its official website.
