Don't Starve Shipwrecked

The second big expansion for Don't Starve, the gorgeous open world survival game with a Lovecraftian theme, has officially gotten a release date. Don't Starve: Shipwrecked will be available in Early Access on Steam on December 1st. It will work if you don't have Reign of Giants, their first DLC.

The pirate-themed expansion pack will have players explore a tropical world filled to the brim with new creatures that fit into the new environment, and new biomes like the ocean, which can be explored by ship. Seasonal weather also makes its debut, with players needing to adapt to survival in conditions such as monsoons and hailstorms. There will also be new playable characters and new mechanics. You can find a complete feature list here.

In the announcement on the Klei Entertainment website, the developer also states that world migration, a mechanic that allows players to travel between worlds, will not be in the Early Access version releasing in a little under two weeks, but will be added at a later date. Don't Starve Together, the game's multiplayer component, won't be available in Shipwrecked. It is however implied to be added to the game at a point in the future.

Don't Starve: Shipwrecked will only be available on systems running Microsoft Windows. Linux and Mac systems won't be supported at launch, and neither a mobile nor console version is in the works as of now.

Quick Take

I'm usually quite worried when an Early Access game gets announced because of the negative experiences I've had with the program. Not with this game though, as this game managed to deliver a fantastic product that is both compelling as well as challenging. It seems like this is one of those cases where making your fans an active part of the development process has actually worked out in their favor. The new expansion looks good, and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action when it's a little closer to the full release.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
