There are few games that always come to mind when you mention a genre. Say FPS, you think of Half Life. Mention Classic RPGs, Baldur's Gate comes to mind. Talk of Japanese tactic RPGs, and Disgaea soon follows. Only one of the three games mentioned until now doesn't have a PC version but that's bound to change soon. Disgaea will hit Steam in Early 2016, NIS announced today.

Disgaea

The Disgaea that will be ported to PC is the original one, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, with a couple of additions and a fresh look. If you're not familiar with the franchise, Disgaea follows the adventures of Laharl, demon prince of the Netherworld in his quest to retake the Overlord throne that used to be of his father. The Etna Mode that was added in the PSP port of the game will also be present in the PC version as well. If you missed it at the time, you'll be able to try it now.

The most important thing for many PC players is the care the developers employ in their ports. Sloppy or lazily ported controls and no mouse support in menus are among the most frustrating things PC players have to deal with at a daily basis. In the case of Disgaea, the developers ensure that the PC version is going to have full mouse and keyboard support, optimized user interface and menus and improved tile textures.

Since the game comes on Steam, you can expect the usual bundle of features to come with it. This means that Achievements, Badges, Trading Cards and Cloud Saves will all be supported in this version of Disgaea.

Disgaea will be available on Steam around February 2016.

Quick Take

Disgaea is the latest of many historic Japanese Games that see a PC release even if after a long time since the original release. Think of Valkyria Chronicles or Final Fantasy XIII. If this means that Japanese publishers are starting to realize the potential of the PC market in the west, we can expect to see many more. I, for one, am all for it.
